German Marshall Fund (GMF)
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is an American institution that stimulates the exchange of ideas and promotes cooperation between the United States and Europe in the spirit of the postwar Marshall Plan. GMF was created in 1972 as a gift from Germany as a permanent memorial to Marshall Plan aid. Through its work in the United States and Europe, GMF has pursued its founding mission to create a closer understanding between partners on both sides of the Atlantic. GMF’s programmes promote the study of international and domestic policies, support comparative research and debate on key issues, such as economy, environment, foreign policy, immigration, and transformation in Central and Eastern Europe. GMF occasionally partners with other foundations, government organizations, or policy institutions, focusing on projects in Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans.
Friedrich Naumann Stiftung
The Friedrich Naumann Foundation is a German foundation that acts on the basis of liberalism. Its goal is to contribute to the furtherance of the principle of freedom. It promotes democracy, the rule of law, market economy, tolerance and civil society. It provides people with knowledge necessary to make conscious political decisions. In cooperation with a variety of partners, the Foundation promotes civil education for adults, presenting the liberal viewpoint in such areas as economic and social policy, human and civil rights, minority rights, local government, European security issues, and matters connected with the European integration and the enlargement of the European Union. The activities of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Poland focus on the idea of developing understanding between Poland and Germany and contributing to the rapprochement of neighbouring states and nations.
Friedrich Ebert Stiftung
The Friedrich Ebert Foundation is a German private, cultural, non-profit institution. It is committed to the ideas and basic values of social democracy and market economy. It was founded in 1925 as a political legacy of Germany’s first democratically elected president, Friedrich Ebert. It employs around 600 people in the offices in Bonn and Berlin, it maintains representations in 90 countries and is engaged in projects in over 100 countries all over the world. Poland is one of the most important areas of the Foundation’s activities, which is confirmed by the fact that the Warsaw office, set up in 1990, is the biggest representation of the Foundation abroad with regard to the number of employees and the financial means. In Poland the Friedrich Ebert Foundation is involved in furthering the process of democratization, supporting economic and social development, promoting social dialogue and pluralism.
Konrad Adenauer Stiftung
The Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation is related to the Christian Democratic movement. Having emerged from the 'Society for Christian Democratic Education Work' founded in 1956, it was named after the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic in 1964. We are guided by the same principles that inspired Adenauer's work. The Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation offers political education, conducts scientific fact-finding research for political projects, grants scholarships to gifted individuals, researches the history of Christian Democracy and supports and encourages European unification, international understanding and development-policy cooperation. The Foundation is represented in 120 countries in the world.
The activities of the Adenauer-Foundation in Poland - which started its work on November 10, 1989 - focus mainly on Poland’s integration into the European Union, the Polish-German relations as well as on Poland’s social and economic transformation. In order to support reforms, the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation is offering know-how in political, legal and economic matters. It organises conferences, seminars and regular meetings of political and economic elites. The Foundation also works together with NGOs, research centres, academic institutes and the church.
The Batory Foundation
The Stefan Batory Foundation is an independent Polish private foundation, funded by American financier and philanthropist George Soros. The Foundation’s mission is to support democracy, development of a civil society, the rule of law, and market economy in Poland and other East European countries. Its key priorities are:
- Enhance the role and involvement of civil society; The Foundation is committed to assist the building of civil society in Poland and throughout the Region. Therefore, it supports a variety of public initiatives, mainly independent non-governmental groups which contribute to increased public participation in public affairs and create equal opportunities for the weaker or disabled.
- Promote civil liberties and the rule of law; The respect for the rule of law, the transparency of public life, protection of civil liberties, minority rights, the rights of women, children and people with disabilities, immigrants and refugees – they are the cornerstone of democracy which the Foundation promotes in Poland and other countries of the Region.
- Develop international cooperation and solidarity; States have clearly defined borders. However, nations and societies should interact and enrich one another. The Foundation supports projects that foster the exchange of experience with political transition, build civil society and solve social problems between Central and Eastern European countries.
Grants are made in support of specific projects, as well as for program-related administrative costs to implement those projects. The Foundation makes also general support grants and awards scholarships for educational studies and for internships. In addition to grantmaking, the Foundation also organizes conferences, meetings, study visits and training sessions.
